TOP STORY

ChatGPT becomes a platform for Agents and Apps

The Summary: At Dev Day 2025, OpenAI unveiled a unified stack for building agents and apps inside ChatGPT. Developers can now use AgentKit for visual agent workflows and Apps SDK to create interactive apps that live directly in chat. With 800 million weekly users, the company is trying to position ChatGPT as more than a chatbot, potentially as a new platform for AI-driven software, complete with visual agent builders, embedded UIs, and payment-ready integrations.

Key details:

  • AgentKit has a visual Agent Builder with a workflow editor, tool access, and a drop-in chat UI

  • Apps in ChatGPT bring third-party apps into chat with a native UI; launch set includes Canva, Figma, Spotify, and more, rolling out to logged-in users outside the EU, with monetization to follow

  • Sora 2 is added to the API from $0.10/sec

Why it matters: OpenAI is betting that ChatGPT will become the new interface for software, where apps, data, and actions converge in one chat window. The company has shipped real tools that compress the agent-building stack, but adoption will hinge on trust, speed, and cost. Developers are wary of lock-in and users still prefer visual control for many tasks. Whether ChatGPT evolves into a genuine AI operating system echoing the early mobile era or stays a polished demo will depend on real-world use and developer traction.

Google brings Gemini AI to the smart home

The Summary: Google has rebuilt its Home ecosystem around Gemini, transforming the smart home into a conversational environment. New upgrades span Google Home app, new Nest cameras, and an upcoming Home Speaker for Gemini. Older devices will also gain access through updates.

Key details:

  • The new Nest Cam and Doorbell feature AI scene understanding that interprets actions, like a FedEx driver leaving a package

  • Gemini replaces Google Assistant across speakers, displays, cameras, and the Home app

  • Over 800 million compatible devices can access the features, extending Google’s smart home network

Why it matters: Gemini rewires how homes operate, by treating context, language, and physical space as one system. Instead of pressing buttons or programming routines, users can describe goals and the home figures out the logic. This brings AI out of screens into lived reality, where intent replaces interface.

Yale study finds AI has not reshaped the job market yet

The Summary: After nearly three years of generative AI in use, Yale University’s Budget Lab finds no measurable disruption in US employment. Despite widespread exposure to AI tools, job patterns remain largely stable, echoing the slow adoption curves of past technologies like PCs and the early internet. The findings suggest that real labor market effects may take years to appear.

Key details:

  • The occupational mix has shifted only 1 percentage point faster than during the early internet era

  • 29% of US workers are in low-AI exposure roles, 46% in medium, and 18% in high-exposure occupations, with no trend change since 2022

  • Most AI usage is concentrated in coding and quantitative tasks

  • Unemployment data show no rise in displacement

  • Some layoffs got rebranded as “AI-driven”, masking corporate over-hiring and cost-cutting

Why it matters: The study data reveal a mismatch between perceived risk and actual disruption, raising questions about how we measure “AI exposure”. If usage keeps mostly siloed in coding tasks, economic effects may depend mostly on diffusion speed, since humans and firms still continue to think in the same patterns. Economic effects won’t come from AI models, but from organizations’ changes.
